NEWTON VILLAGE CRICKET MATCH REPORT BY WENDY SANDERSON
The third annual cricket match between Newton Cricket Club and Newton Village All-Stars took place on Sunday 5th July in the beautiful surroundings of Mowden Hall School cricket field.
The sun shone brightly & after a brief delay due to the misplacement of the All-Stars shirts play got underway. The All-Stars finished their 20 overs with a creditable 120 runs. Newton Cricket Club replied with a total of 140 from their 20 overs. After a break for tea, play resumed and an outstanding performance by the All-Stars openers led to a 2nd innings total of 133 from 15 overs (the 2nd innings overs reduced by 5 due to the approaching weather). Newton CC then put on 56 runs from 8 overs before a spectacular thunderstorm robbed all present of an exciting finish.
Special mention to the All-Stars Nick Reed who scored 55 in the first innings, 57 in the second and also took 4 wickets. Also, Tom Beddis, with scores of 18 and 42 along with taking an important wicket. Junior, Josh Trewhitt put in a great performance keeping wicket for the All-Stars in both innings and carrying out a first-class stumping. Fellow Junior, Blake Vasello proved to be a great all-rounder and kept the ‘seniors’ on their toes.
Many thanks to Alan Rutherford (scoring,) Peter Stoddart (score-board,) Derek Morgan (Umpire) & Newton & Bywell Social Group for providing a first-class tea.
Finally a big thank-you to everyone who took part, the players, officials & the many spectators who earned their Pimms with their great support.
Newton Village All-Stars (The Crocs) 120 + 133 = 253 from 35 overs
Newton Cricket Club (The Cows) 140 + 56 = 196 from 28 overs
The Cows needed 58 to win from 7 overs.
